Five teeth-whitening myths, checked by a dentist

Charcoal, lemon juice and UV lights: what works, what doesn't and what can harm your enamel.

Charcoal toothpaste is abrasive and can wear enamel, which makes teeth look more yellow over time.

Lemon juice and vinegar are acids. They soften enamel rather than whiten it.

Professional whitening uses carbamide or hydrogen peroxide at safe, regulated strengths. In Ireland only a dentist can provide the stronger gels, and your first session must be supervised.

Sensitivity is normal for a day or two and settles quickly. A custom tray keeps the gel where it should be.

“The best treatment is the one that's right for you, not the most expensive.”
